The Fifth Universalist Society in Boston was established in 1836. In 1863 it was joined by the Church of the Paternity (South Universalist Church) and became the Shawmut Universalist Society. Under the leadership of the Rev. George L. Perin, the church developed a range of philanthropic programs in the 1890's and was popularly known as the Every-Day Church.
